XXX . V Dialing for dollars: Banks use smartphones to eliminate ATM cards
ant to see just how profoundly the smartphone can change a trip to the bank ATM?
Head to 70 W. Madison St. in Chicago.
Wintrust is riding a banking technology trend for 2015, according to Mercator Advisory Group. "We anticipate the increasing convergence of ATMs and mobile banking" in what's commonly called cardless cash access or mobile cash access, the Maynard, Mass.-based consulting firm said in its newly released report "2015 Outlook: Banking Channels."
To make the cardless-cash transactions possible on existing ATMs, the Wintrust machines are being outfitted with software from FIS, a technology provider to banks, retailers and payment processors. FIS said Wintrust is the first of its 1,600 mobile-banking clients to roll out cardless cash on a widespread basis.
Canadian-owned BMO Harris Bank, the Chicago-area's second-biggest bank after Chase, has been testing mobile cash technology with its employees and expects a "broader" rollout to customers in the first quarter of 2015, a BMO spokesperson said.
Wintrust, a $19 billion-asset institution with an older customer base, sees the technology as an avenue to develop relationships with its depositors' children, said Thomas Ormseth, senior vice president for noncredit services for Wintrust.
"Going forward, given the proliferation of smartphones and the user acceptance of the younger crowd, we need to be in that space," Ormseth said in an interview last month.
Here's how cardless cash machines work at Wintrust:
Consumers can use their Wintrust mobile app to preset how much money they want to withdraw from the ATM on future visits. Once they arrive at the ATM, they sign into the mobile banking app on their phone with their four-digit password. On the phone, they select the cardless cash option, which then opens the smartphone's camera. Then, on the ATM screen, the customer touches the "cardless cash" button, which creates a QR code, a square matrix-style bar code. Customers hold their smartphones over the QR code on the ATM screen, tap submit, and the ATM dispenses their cash. The receipt heads straight to the phone.
The consumer only needs to touch the ATM once — to pick the "cardless cash" option. The withdrawal takes about 10 seconds, compared with about 40 seconds for a traditional ATM withdrawal, Wintrust said.
Wintrust and FIS tout the security benefits of cardless cash.
First, they say the QR code that flashes on the ATM screen exposes no sensitive information but tells the phone to talk to the ATM. Because withdrawing cash with the phone is faster than using a card, the technology will appeal to security-conscious consumers who want to get their money out of an ATM as fast as possible.
Second, if the smartphone were lost or stolen, someone would need to know the password to the banking app to use the cardless cash option. Also, once a user logs in to the mobile app, it times out quickly, making it unlikely that someone who stole or found the phone would get to a Wintrust ATM in time to withdraw cash.
It also removes the threat of "skimming," because there is no card sliding in. Skimming devices typically use an electronic device attached to the ATM card reader. The device captures the code on the card's magnetic strip. The skimming device can also include a small camera that records personal identification numbers punched in by legitimate cardholders. The electronic information then is used to make fake bank and debit cards.
Wintrust had been testing the cardless cash feature with its employees starting in 2013.
As of Dec. 8, Wintrust mobile banking users had made about 60 withdrawals without problems.
Mercator, the consulting firm, also sees a future for ATMs with video capabilities, giving consumers the chance to talk to bank personnel working in other locations, including call centers on a Sunday.
Almost half, or 45 percent, of banking customers say they would try teller-assisted videoconferences in branches if they need help making transactions, Mercator said. That bodes well for banks investing in new generations of ATMs.

XXX . V0 Financial Matrix: The Elite's Third System of Control
Whoever does not wish to render history incomprehensible by departmentalizing it – political, economic, social – would perhaps take the view that it is in essence a battle of dominant wills (elites), fighting in every way they can for the material which is common to everything they construct: the human labor force. (masses)” (parenthesis mine) In other words, the aristocratic elites (dominant wills) seek methods to control masses (human labor) production. labor.
With this perspective, I reviewed the economic field where I noted the classical economist were the first to identify the three factors of all production - labor, land, and capital.
for instance, wrote, “The Law of the Increase of Production Depends on those of Three Elements— Labor. Capital, and Land.” When I combined these two concepts together, it became clear that in order for the elites to control the masses production, they must do so through controlling the three factors of production - labor, land, and capital. Invariably, this theory of control is confirmed by history.
The Financial Matrix, in other words, is not the first matrix of control. On the contrary it is the third one based upon the three factors of production. In reality, most of the readers (assuming you didn’t sleep through history class) already know about the other two matrices of control - the Physical Matrix (human slavery) and the Land Matrix (feudal serfdom). Paradoxically, although Western Civilization’s founders (the Greeks and Romans) wrote about liberty and justice extensively, they hypocritically exercised a Physical Matrix to enslave their defeated foes. The slaves were forced to do the manual work in society since the classical civilizations thought physical work only worthy of slaves. This allowed the ancients the leisure to speak, write, and lead while the slaved toiled away in the Physical Matrix. Indeed, the preferred method of control throughout the classical period was the Physical Matrix until Christianity permeated the Roman Empire.
Christianity changed the social norms of the late Roman society. Whereas slavery for conquered nations was acceptable previously, Christianity taught that all men were created equal before an almighty God and that fellow-believers were all brothers and sisters in Christ. Of course, enslaving one’s brother or sister became increasingly difficult to justify (unfortunately, the same cannot be said for infidels). Thus, the Physical Matrix collapsed under its own weight. Naturally, with the loss of the Physical Matrix, the aristocratic elites sought another control matrix to replace it. With labor no longer controllable, moving to the next factor of production (land) seemed like a reasonable course of action and the Land Matrix was born - feudal serfdom.
The elites simply moved the matrix of control from the Physical Matrix to the Land Matrix. Because they owned all the land, the aristocratic elites (princes, kings, and lords) forced the serfs to pay rent to the lord who owned the land. The serfs, not strong enough to resist the powerful lords and having no other options simply complied. By surrendering around half of their agricultural production plus agreeing to work the lord’s fields several days a week, the serfs were permitted to live on the lord’s land. Although, the people were no longer slaves, they were not much better off since they had no freedom of movement and were taxed over 50% of their productive capacity. Feudalism may have ended slavery (Physical Matrix) in most of Europe, but only to turn the people into serfs (Land Matrix).
During the late middle-ages, the reintroduction of gold and silver changed the economics of feudalism. The serfs no longer needed to live on the lord’s land in order to survive. Instead, serfs began moving to the growing cities where in the city air, the bakers, butchers, and candlestick makers could live free by selling their services for money. They, in turn, could then use their accumulated money to purchase other necessary items to survive. This development freed the serfs from the land and the subsequent economic losses caused the Land Matrix to collapse. Both the Physical and Land Matrix were now history, however, there was still one other factor of production left, namely, capital. Not surprisingly, for nearly four hundred years (from the early 1500’s through the early 1900’s) a battle raged between the elites and the masses to determine whether money would be set by the market (gold standard) or set by the controlling elites.
It’s important to remember that money was not created by the state. Rather, as Mises points out, entrepreneurs created money by trial and error through realizing that gold and silver could be exchanged for current production at any time. Money simply was a measurement of exchange value ratios. Indeed, the rediscovery of gold and silver money led to an explosion of middle-class wealth as people were rewarded for producing more. The gold standard ensured justice for the masses against elites attempts to manipulate the exchange values of monetary system. Because gold is a fixed-quantity and difficult to mine, inflation was low and predictable, whereas the increased division-of-labor caused by the capitalistic system to create more wealth for more people than at any time in recorded history. The gold standard, in short, ensured justice for all by checking the elites desire to create a Financial Matrix by controlling capital.
Unfortunately, however, the elites will not rest until they build a matrix to control the masses wealth. Hence, at the turn of the 20th century, the state and its elite cronies, broke through the gold-standard barrier and created the Financial Matrix. Through using fiat money (money not backed by gold or silver), the elites flooded the marketplace with bogus exchange values causing rapid inflation and rampant injustice. The Financial Matrix was birthed through a web of fractional-reserve banking (FRB), increasing national debts, and increasing taxes. One can recognize the extent of the monetary injustice caused by the Financial Matrix when studying what inflation has done to the value of the US dollar. For instance, the value of one dollar in 1913 is now worth less than four cents today. Or, said differently, one needs 25 dollars today to buy what one dollar purchased in 1913.
Inflation, however, is just one of the many injustices associated with the Financial Matrix. When inflation is combined with the increased personal and national debts (which result in an increase in taxation), one can see why the masses across the civilized world struggle to make ends meet. Indeed, the government-sponsored fractional reserve banking (FRB) system allows banks to partner with the central bank to create the majority of society’s money out of thin air. That’s correct, the FRB system permits banks to loan money into existence while the borrower must pay this fiat loan back with money he must earn through production.
In essence, artificial dollars are created without any real production and then loaned to people who must pay back the loan with interest from real production. Absurdly, the FRB system allows banks to create fake units of exchange that must be paid back by the borrower with real units of exchange plus interest. This is why the FRB system is the root of the new matrix of control and why the Financial Matrix is the most effective form of elites control ever developed. Moreover, the crony-capitalistic FRB system sets the low-interest rates which create the boom/bust cycle plaguing modern society. And, to add insult to injury, once the FRB system fosters the predictable boom/bust cycle, the boom is credited to the ingenious money controllers while the bust is blamed on the free markets. Apparently, its a loaded game of heads and tails where heads means the elites win and tails means the masses lose!
Although economists the caliber of Ricardo, Mises, and Von Hayek have insisted the FRB system is fraudulent and unstable, it survives through the masses ignorance and the elites support. Perhaps British Monetary Reformer, Michael Rowbotham, described the fraudulent nature of the FRB system the best when he wrote:
The creation and supply of money is now left almost entirely to banks and other lending institutions. Most people imagine that if they borrow from a bank, they are borrowing other people's money. In fact, when banks and building societies make any loan, they create new money. Money loaned by a bank is not a loan of pre-existent money; money loaned by a bank is additional money created. The stream of money generated by people, businesses and governments constantly borrowing from banks and other lending institutions is relied upon to supply the economy as a whole. Thus the supply of money depends upon people going into debt, and the level of debt within an economy is no more than a measure of the amount of money that has been created...
In effect, today’s Financial Matrix relies upon millions of people voluntarily selling themselves into financial slavery. For when one combines artificially-low centrally-controlled interest rates to the FRB system, one has an irresistible combination that leads consumers and entrepreneurs to borrow money into existence. This money-creation, however, leads to the inflation. The inflation causes the boom/bust cycle when prices skyrocket. At this point, the consumers and entrepreneurs default on the loans they can no longer service and the bust wipes out the inflated values created during the boom. Not surprisingly, the boom/bust cycle occurred twice during the Greenspan-controlled central banking era. In both cases, the artificially-controlled low interest rates fueled the consumer’s appetite for speculation and “easy” profits. The internet bubble increased the Nasdaq nearly by a factor of five during the boom between 19995 and 2000, but it then preceded to collapse by over 60% between 2000-2001.Regrettably, controllers seem to be perpetual optimist go from failure to failure without learning anything. As a result, when the twin-towers came crashing down, Greenspan repeated the same policy which caused the previous boom/bust cycle. This time, however, money poured into the housing markets and prices shot upwards of 50% in just a few short years. Not shockingly, the mortgage companies sought to maximize profits by helping everyone qualify for a home mortgage, even those who didn’t have steady jobs. The increase in mortgages exploded the money supply which further fueled higher priced houses and mortgages. The housing bubble was blowing up. Predictably, however, when the non-qualified borrowers could not make their mortgage payments, the housing bubble collapsed, the money supply collapsed, and the financial house of cards nearly followed them, but for government bail outs.
Above all, however, is the loss of house equities that have occurred since 1950. Disgracefully, the Financial Matrix has gutted the home-equity percentages (amount of value owned after subtracting all mortgages), decreasing home-equity percentages (percentage of ownership free from house loans) from over 80% to just over 30% today. This indicates that the Financial Matrix has gutted nearly 50% of the USA’s $25 trillion housing market in the last 60 years! That’s correct, nearly $12.5 trillion dollars (almost as much as the total USA national debt) lost by US citizens without so much as a whimper.
Americans sense something isn't right, but few have a clue what it is, let alone how to fix it. Indeed, both the Occupy Wall Street and Tea Party movements formed as protests against injustice and exploitation. Protests without plans, however, usually leads to rebellion and peasant rebellions have a poor historical track records in generating positive change. Instead, the masses must learn to exit the Financial Matrix through a disciplined plan of financial defense and offense. This is why we formed LIFE Leadership and why we created the Financial Fitness Program - to teach people how to exit the Financial Matrix without violence. Remember, one is not coerced into the Financial Matrix, but rather enticed.
To me, the Financial Matrix is eerily similar to Neo’s discovery of the matrix in the movie called The Matrix. In several scenes, Morpheus reveals to Neo that the world is not as it seems. That a matrix controls the masses whether they are working, playing, or sleeping. The matrix is, “the world that has been pulled over your eyes, to blind you from the truth.” Neo, needless to say, asked what truth Morpheus was referring to and learns, “That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison…for your mind….Unfortunately, no one can be… told what the Matrix is… you have to see it for yourself.” Morpheus places two pills before Neo and explains that if Neo takes the blue pill he will live an illusion and never escape the matrix, but if he takes the red pill, he will learn the truth about the matrix and learn how to set himself free.
If you, like Neo, have been searching for answers, the good news is: the search is over. The blue and red pills have been placed before you. Do you take the red pill, read the rest of the book, and learn how deep the rabbit hole goes or do you take the blue pill, set down the book, and believe the illusion of whatever you want to believe. Your destiny hangs in the balance. Choose wisely.

Automated Teller Machine
Since its inception in the 1960’s, the Automated Teller Machine, otherwise known as the ATM, has allowed individuals to perform financial transactions quickly and efficiently without the need of a human bank teller. With the advent of online and mobile banking, the ATM has long past the time when it was looked at as a major innovation. But the truth is the ATM greatly impacted how financial institutions are able to go about their business and still is an indispensable part of the business today – the ATM is still used more often than the branch, website, or mobile apps for consumer banking needs (Banking 2020). The advent of the ATM also led to important innovation in hardware, software and security technology, along with mentioned mobile and online banking platforms. As it turns out, the ATM is not done innovating itself. According to a recent report from ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), there is a lot of exciting advancements and new functionality currently being integrated into the ATM and more coming in the near future. Advancements like solar power, social media capabilities, gift purchases, lottery ticket purchase capability and integration with mobile phones are all innovations being incorporated into the ATM.
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing, put simply, is the storing and accessing of data and programs over the Internet. Cloud innovation is revolutionizing the enterprise and the roles of the CTO and CIO. In the past, many technical professionals saw the Cloud as a means to cutting costs. However, the cloud has had a great impact on speeding innovation. Hardware provisioning, sys-admin, security, access control, backups, new release installation -- all this administrative overhead diverts resources, and the time needed to innovate more. Cloud computing can enhance continuous delivery cycles with faster startup times and low overhead operating environments. In the past few years, we have seen cloud truly move beyond hype to a technology that has become embedded and vital to organizations. Business leaders have begun to recognize that the cloud is about more than reducing costs and enhancing efficiencies and can be incorporated into the overall business strategy to spur faster time-to-market and help better orchestrate businesses. According to 451 Research, the cloud computing will reach a market size of $19.5B by 2016.
Big Data
The amount of data in the business world has exploded. Analyzing these large data sets has become an extremely important tool to finding new avenues of productivity growth and innovation for organizations. Due to the increasing volume and detail of information captured by enterprises, the rise of multimedia, social media, and the Internet, every industry is now dealing with the implications of big data. Big Data uses analytics to identifying patterns, manage risks and tackle previously unsolvable problems and has been credited with everything from improving business performance to contributing to political campaigns, sporting victories and medical breakthroughs. One group of individuals that has been greatly affected by the rise of Big Data are marketers. Marketers are overrun with data, but the Big Data revolution has the potential to help them reach and engage with customers and consumers in new ways through data analytics and metrics. Big Data can allow organizations to move beyond basic demographic to target and address the individual - gaining a more complete picture of a target audience can provide insights as to how to engage the customer in innovative ways.
Containerization
The roots of containerization can be traced back to the late 18th century when coal miners in England would use horse-drawn wheeled wagons built with ironwork to carry their loads. Modern containerization is just short of 60 years old and was marked by the innovation of the intermodal container that could be efficiently loaded onto ships from trucks and would hold securely on long sea voyages. The result was a thick corrugated steel box that incorporated a twistlock mechanism atop each of the four corners, allowing the container to be easily secured and lifted using cranes. The patented design introduced the international standardization of shipping containers and in the six decades since its first voyage, 90% of non-bulk cargo worldwide is moved by containers stacked on transport ships.Containerization and the ability to have one container, with the same cargo, transported with minimum interruption via ships, trucks and trains simplified the whole logistical process of shipping and has been one of the most important innovations in transportation and international trade. Containerization was able to dramatically reduce the expense of international trade, while at the same time, increasing its speed and efficiency.
Barcode
The first barcode patent was handed out in 1952. But it wasn’t until 1974 when a pack of gum was purchased at Marsh's Supermarket in Troy, Ohio that the first Universal Product Code (UPC) that we recognized from our trips to the market today was actually put into use. Between those events, barcode technology was used in a variety of industries – from railcar identification to post office vehicle tracking. After a few years of growing pains, the use of barcodes for UPCs became wildly successful. Within 6 years, 8,000 stores per year were converting to the system. Barcode scanning offered stores many benefits, not the least of which was the detailed sales information acquired by the new systems allowing for greater responsiveness to customer needs. Stores saw a 10–12% increase in sales and a 1–2% decrease in operating cost. In total, it was shown in the that the return on investment for a barcode scanner was 41.5%.The introduction of the barcode also laid the groundwork for the use of Big Data, targeting and identification that retailers are now able use to provide a greater understanding of individual consumer shopping patterns. It is an area that continues to innovate and is consistently being incorporated into new technologies such as mobile and social.
Beyond retail, you can find barcodes being put to use in many different environments including; healthcare and hospital settings, wildlife tracking, mail, ticketing, etc.
ERP
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is business management software that allows an organization to manage and integrate all facets of an operation, including product planning, HR, development, manufacturing processes, sales and marketing into one solution to streamline processes and information across the entire organization.Gartner came up with the term ERP in 1990. But the idea of ERP has been around for over 50 years when software engineers created programs to monitor inventory, reconcile balances, and report on status. The solution evolved over the decades to encompass more manufacturing processes and eventually expanded to back-office functions like accounting and human resources.
The ERP solutions of today have evolved to include business intelligence while also handling "front-office" functions such as sales automation, marketing automation and ecommerce. ERP systems are used by a broad range of industries—from wholesale distribution to ecommerce. With an ERP solution, employees have access to accurate information that enables them to make better decisions faster. Not only that, but ERP software helps to eliminate redundant processes and systems, dramatically lowering the cost of doing business overall.
XXX . V0000 Top 10 Inventions in Money Technology
Some significant technologies like vending machines, travelers cheques, and slot machines didn't make the list because they were developed in the late 1800s. Our goal was to focus on the innovations from the last century, narrowing the list significantly.
Other technologies developed in the 1990s didn't make the list because most have not reached the level of impact that the following items have.
1.) The Electronic Cash Register - 1906
Although banks have been able to move currency electronically for decades, only recently has the average consumer had the capability to use electronic transfers in any meaningful way. The increasing power and decreasing cost of computers - coupled with advancements in communication technology that make global interaction available at vastly reduced costs - have together made the digital transfer of funds a reality for millions of individuals around the world. As a result, we are now witnessing the early stages of development of the digital economy.
It wasn't until 1927 when the first armored car robbery occurred. The Flatheads Gang was responsible for this robbery near Pittsburgh, PA. It was reported that $104,250 was taken in the heist.
Prior to World War II, few retailers sold on credit, and those that did confined their credit business to well-known customers. Creditors kept their own accounts and engaged in information exchanges with each other, sharing lists of names known to be poor credit risks. The first bureaus were non-profit cooperatives, owned by the merchants who participated. A national association called Associated Credit Bureaus was organized in 1937.Sensing a need for standards, Fico Credit-scoring was invented in 1956 by two Stanford mathematicians, Bill Fair and Earl Isaac. They correctly guessed that lenders didn't really want credit "history"; they wanted point-accurate prediction. By crunching the right numbers, Bill and Earl could come up with a figure between 300 and 900 which would precisely forecast an individual's future creditworthiness.
Up until about 1970, the records were kept manually in paper-based filing systems. In 1970 there were approx. 2250 credit reporting companies in small cities all across the country.
SOCIAL IMPACT:Today there are three main credit reporting systems – Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Each of these has a large number of smaller, affiliated credit bureaus. As of 1998, ACB had 591 member credit bureaus around the U.S., selling 600 million credit reports annually.
Don Wetzel was the co-patentee and chief conceptualist of the modern automated teller machine, an idea he said he thought of while waiting in line at a Dallas bank. At the time (1968) Wetzel was the Vice President of Product Planning at Docutel, the company that developed automated baggage-handling equipment. The other two inventors listed on the patent were Tom Barnes, the chief mechanical engineer and George Chastain, the electrical engineer. It took five million dollars to develop the ATM. The concept of the modern ATM first began in 1968, a working prototype came about in 1969 and Docutel was issued a patent in 1973. The first working ATM was installed in a New York based Chemical Bank.
The first ATMs were off-line machines, meaning money was not automatically withdrawn from an account. The bank accounts were not connected by a computer network to the ATM. Therefore, banks were at first very exclusive about who they gave ATM privileges to, giving them only to credit card holders with good banking records. Wetzel, Barnes and Chastain developed the first real ATM cards, cards with a magnetic strip and a personal ID number to get cash. ATM cards had to be different from credit cards so account information could be included.SOCIAL IMPACT:Since surcharges became legal in 1996, the number of ATMs has increased by more than 200,000, to a total of 352,000. Banks and other institutions have installed more ATMs in the past six years than in the previous quarter century.
These days, ATMs outnumber bank branches by more than four to one. Cruise ships have ATMs. The U.S. Navy started putting ATMs on warships in 1988 to make cash accessible to sailors, and 144 ships now have them. Americans do more than 1.1 billion ATM transactions a month -- which breaks down to 26,000 transactions a minute.
The credit card industry actually began in the United States in the 1930s when oil companies and hotel chains began issuing credit cards to customers for purchases made at their own gas stations and hotels. During World War II, heavy expenditures were used to aid the military and government. As men went to battle, the commercial industry shifted its focus onto the war effort. However, after the War ended, as reunited families and a U.S. economy shifting its focus back to the consumer industry the buying public became more attuned to using credit again.
A second type of credit card, the bank credit card, was introduced in the 1950s. During this decade, several financial franchises evolved to form today's major credit card companies. In 1951, The Franklin National Bank in New York introduced the first real credit card. On August 16, 1966, a group of banks collaborated together to form what is now MasterCard International.
Bank of America issued the BankAmericard (now Visa), the first bank credit card later in 1958. They were first promoted to traveling salesmen (more common in that era) for use on the road. By the early 1960s, more companies offered credit cards, advertising them as a time-saving device rather than a form of credit. American Express and MasterCard became huge successes overnight, and by the mid-'70s, Congress had to begin regulation of the credit card industry by banning such practices as the mass mailing of active cards to those who had not requested them.
Today, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are some of the most recognized brand names in the world.SOCIAL IMPACT:The social impact of the credit card cannot be under-estimated. Credit cards have allowed consumers to carry debt, something that previously required a bank loan – a much more intensive process than a credit-card approval. Credit cards have been the primary instrument that fueled international consumerism and high consumer debt, each of which has spurred multiple trickle-down industries and, for an entire class of citizens, a financial trap that is the defining characteristic of their personal choices, including jobs, travel and in some cases, survival. But because of the ease of getting credit and the intangible nature of credit card money, the credit card has also led to unprecedented personal bankruptcies.
Wallace Flint was the first person to suggest an automated checkout system in 1932, and although Flint's system was economically unfeasible, it was an important step toward the bar codes we have today. 40 years later, Flint, as vice-president of the National Association of Food Chains, supported the efforts which led to the Uniform Product Code (UPC).
In late 1940's the supermarket industry approached Drexel Institute of Technology, Philadelphia, to find out a solution to automate their check out counter. At that time checkout counters used to take long time in clearing the customers and used to make lot of mistakes in data entry. Though the dean declined the project, a mechanical engineering Instructor Mr. Norman Joseph Woodland and his friend Mr. Bernard Bob Silver took up the project themselves, and in 1952 they were issued a joint patent.
Later Joseph Woodland took a position in IBM to develop the automated check out counter using his invention. In 1959 he succeeded to make the prototype, but the feasibility studies led him to recommend that the project be dropped. Later Philco Corporation bought the patent from Woodland and Silver. Philco Corporation later sold this to RCA Corporation. Mr. Francis Beck of RCA Corporation fabricated an automated check out counter and co-authored the patent with counter.
Finally in July 1972, Kroger's in Kenwood, Ohio became the first fully automated Supermarket. In 1973 one of Beck's prototypical checkout stands was donated to the Smithsonian's National museum of American History. On June 26th 1974, a jumbo box of Wrigley's Spearmint gum with today's UPC code became the first consumer item ever scanned signaling the beginning of Barcode world.SOCIAL IMPACT:The bar code has spawned the data mining industry by allowing unprecedented information about the movement and sales of products. This information has allowed the evolution of production-on-demand, a reduction in inventory cost and insight into delivery chains, purchasing patterns and myriad other logistical measures.
The miniaturization of electronic components in 1978 made it possible to mass produce Smart Cards for general release. Since then, the demand has grown considerably, to a stage where Smart Cards can now be found on every continent throughout the world.SOCIAL IMPACT:The smart card allows for much more complex information to be stored locally, including allowing the movement of currency from the center (credit card centralized network) to the edges (stored value on the card). Although Smart Card usage has caught on in several applications, the biggest social change is yet to be felt, as more and more transactional information will be stored locally.
In 1961, UC Berkeley Professor Richard Mattessich conceptualized the development of the computerized spreadsheet first in a paper "Budgeting Models and System Simulation" published in The Accounting Review, July 1961 and later in two books Accounting and Analytical Methods and Simulation of the Firm Through a Budget Computer Program which contains, among others, print-out illustrations and the computer program written in FORTRAN IV by two of his research assistants, Tom C. Schneider and Paul A. Zitlau.
However Mattessich's work was of little influence, and Bricklin proceeded to build the first viable product in the spreadsheet arena, making him the "father" of the electronic spreadsheet.
Dan Bricklin was developing a spread sheet analysis for a Harvard Business School "case study" report and had two options – either do it by hand or use a awkward time-sharing mainframe program. Bricklin thought there must be a better way. He wanted a program where people could visualize the spreadsheet as they created it. His metaphor was "an electronic blackboard and electronic chalk in a classroom."
By the fall of 1978, Bricklin had programmed the first working prototype of his concept in integer basic. The program helped users input and manipulate a matrix of five columns and 20 rows. The first version was not very "powerful" so Bricklin recruited an MIT acquaintance Bob Frankston to improve and expand the program.
About 1 million copies of the spreadsheet program were sold during VisiCalc's product lifetime.
The market for electronic spreadsheet software was growing rapidly in the early 1980s and VisiCalc stakeholders were slow to respond to the introduction of the IBM PC that used an Intel computer chip. Beginning in September 1983, legal conflicts between VisiCorp and Software Arts distracted the VisiCalc developers, Bricklin and Frankston. During this period, Mitch Kapor developed Lotus and his spreadsheet program quickly became the new industry spreadsheet standard.
The next milestone came with the introduction of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. When Microsoft launched the Windows operating system in 1987, Excel was one of the first application products released for it. When Windows finally gained wide acceptance with Version 3.0 in late 1989 Excel became Microsoft's flagship product.SOCIAL IMPACT:Individuals and businesses are now able to do much more sophisticated financial planning, research and development of scenarios. Numbers can now be represented by formulas, allowing information in the spreadsheet to change across the document with the change of one value.
The algorithm came out of work by Ronald Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Len Adelman (the term "RSA" is derived from the initials of their respective last names) at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science in 1976-77.
The group had been inspired by earlier work at Stanford University by Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman, who were pursuing multi-user cryptographic techniques.
Rivest was struck by the idea while nursing a headache on a couch. Rivest devised the system based on the notion that it is easy to multiply two large prime numbers to create an even larger number, but hard to start with the big number and find the prime factors. Encrypted communication relies on each party having a public key and a secret key. By obtaining someone's public key, it's possible to independently agree upon a formula that lets you exchange encrypted information.
Before they could present the system, however, Rivest was contacted by an employee of the National Security Administration, who warned him that if he presented the cryptography scheme at an upcoming conference, he risked violating the 1954 Munitions Control Act. The act prohibited exporting knowledge about cryptography, and since foreign nationals would be at the conference where he was scheduled to present, he could well be exporting prohibited encryption technology. MIT was able to resolve that issue with the NSA, which later said that the employee who contacted Rivest was acting on his own.
MIT decided to patent the algorithm, but because it had been published before the patent was applied for, it couldn't get foreign rights to it. MIT received the patent on September 20, 1983, and granted an exclusive license to the company, RSA Security.SOCIAL IMPACT:Encryption is the sine qua non for the exchange of private information via public information networks, including the Internet. The battle between the rights of the individual and the responsibilities of the government are hinged upon how much of the exchange of information is available to regulatory and oversight arms of the government.
Probably the most revealing part of doing this research was seeing the lag time between the technology first being developed and general market acceptance. In the case of the ATM machine, the lag time was over 50 years. We often wonder about the technologies that didn't make it onto the radar screen - the big things that simply faded from existence before they were able to get any real market feedback.
Several new technologies are making significant inroads into the money world. Micropayment technologies, prepaid credit cards, mobile payment systems, and biometrics are industries on the verge of success. Public policy decisions, general economic conditions, financial backing, and the sheer determination and resolve of the startup team are the primary factors that will separate the winners from the losers as we move forward.
ATM malware attacks: Head them off at the BIOS
photo istock
ATM operators do have resources to protect their terminals against cyberattacks, though. ATM Marketplace talked recently with Sam Heiney, director of global product solutions at Netop about one approach, "secure remote control," and learned that, in addition to safeguarding the BIOS against unauthorized access, it can increase uptime and efficiency in an ATM fleet.
Q: What security issues are you generally addressing with customers?
A: Where we tend to key in is more of the software related attacks and we are seeing a substantial amount of malware that targets ATMs.
Oftentimes that malware is injected physically by trying to access USB ports or, especially on older equipment, trying to gain access to those machines to inject that malware.
[Our concern] as a remote control company is making sure that the network vulnerabilities are sealed up … we continue to see attacks on the BIOS.
Finding a toolset that allows you to change the password, change the settings and secure the BIOS of those machines is important to a lot of those customers.
Q: What attacks are deployers seeing along those lines?
A: Usually people are ripping up the machine to try and access ports or CD drives or USB drives. And then they're installing software, they're trying to get that machine to power cycle so they can access the BIOS — and then the malware attacks come in and they try to reprogram the machine and get it to boot from a black box.
And you can effectively infiltrate the machine and access the hard drive or you can infiltrate the machine through the network connectivity and access the computer to program it or get it to reboot and power cycle into a different boot sequence. Then you can do a lot of damage.
Q: How does remote control help with malware threats?
A: There is no one silver bullet, [but] one of the tools that financial institutions use to manage their ATM fleets is remote support — remote control. Our goal and our focus is in making sure that you take the remote access and the remote control vector — that threat vector — out of play.
Your remote support tool falls into that class where you want to make sure that anyone who accesses the machine is authenticated — that they are who they say they are.
Then you want to log everything they do when they were there so that you can go back and review what happened and when and then that remote support tool will actually become useful in your investigation of any events or incidents that did happen.
Secondarily, a remote access tool gives you the ability to go in and start digging into trace logs and event logs and trying to find out in real time what is happening on that machine. That's a pretty powerful tool for the security team.
Q: What's the value of remote access in the network environment?
A: It's not just remotely accessing that device through a LAN or WAN or a wireless network, it's actually controlling it and seeing it and remotely — it's as if you were sitting in front of it [while you're] a thousand miles away.
If you have a security issue, Microsoft, Android, the Linux community they all will come up with patches. And you want to deploy those patches. But then, after that deployment, which oftentimes can happen across your network, you then want to make sure that it took. Did the patch get installed correctly? Are there any faults or errors or issues?
And having a remote support tool means that instead of rolling a truck out to each and every location, I can check those from my office.
Q: How is the service delivered and implemented?
A: You have tools that enable you to use the resources you've already deployed. And that means if you have a LAN or WAN environment that's closed, great, you have completely closed on-premises remote support. If you have a virtual private cloud, then that tool should also be able to adapt so that you can use that architecture.
Most of the financial institutions are not doing all the support and service for their ATM fleets. They are relying on external partners to help accomplish that. So having a tool that can securely access your network from a different network is also really important.
Q: How can a remote security tool ensure against intrusion via a third-party breach?
A: The best defense has to do with authentication and authorization. You want to make sure that the remote user is who they say they are.
Then you want to authenticate them with, typically, a user name a password. And for PCI, you need to have a second factor — a hardware or software token, or an SMS — something else as a part of the authentication.
Once you've proven that you are who you say you are, you then have the permissions issue. What should you be able to do when you access that machine?
Being able to authenticate and then authorize that user and having different roles and permissions for users is really a requirement to effective remote security.
Q: How large does a network need to be to cost-justify the service?
A: The first question I ask people is, "Do you ever need to roll a truck? Do you ever need to send someone out to that machine?" If it's not physically present and you have to go and access it somewhere else, then having a tool that can help you remotely becomes pretty powerful.
Q: Any final thoughts?
A: I think that a lot of organizations want to talk about not just security, but also about "How do I pay for that security?" The way you do that is by having a tool that supports your security need, but also generates efficiency, productivity and decreases your cost.
We have a large regional bank in Texas and they have several hundred ATMs in service. They were able to claw back 1,600 to 2,000 hours of uptime for their ATM fleet just by using a remote support tool.
It allows them to maintain a high level of uptime and availability on their ATM fleet and that means better customer engagement, more services through those ATMs and better profitability.
If you can give people a better return on the hardware investment; if you can make your support team more efficient, and meet your security burden, then I think you have a winning solution.

Mouse
Mouse is the most popular pointing device. It is a very famous cursor-control device having a small palm size box with a round ball at its base, which senses the movement of the mouse and sends corresponding signals to the CPU when the mouse buttons are pressed.Generally, it has two buttons called the left and the right button and a wheel is present between the buttons. A mouse can be used to control the position of the cursor on the screen, but it cannot be used to enter text into the computer.
Advantages
- Easy to use
- Not very expensive
- Moves the cursor faster than the arrow keys of the keyboard.
Joystick
Joystick is also a pointing device, which is used to move the cursor position on a monitor screen. It is a stick having a spherical ball at its both lower and upper ends. The lower spherical ball moves in a socket. The joystick can be moved in all four directions. The function of the joystick is similar to that of a mouse. It is mainly used in Computer Aided Designing (CAD) and playing computer games.
Light Pen
Light pen is a pointing device similar to a pen. It is used to select a displayed menu item or draw pictures on the monitor screen. It consists of a photocell and an optical system placed in a small tube. When the tip of a light pen is moved over the monitor screen and the pen button is pressed, its photocell sensing element detects the screen location and sends the corresponding signal to the CPU.
Track Ball
Track ball is an input device that is mostly used in notebook or laptop computer, instead of a mouse. This is a ball which is half inserted and by moving fingers on the ball, the pointer can be moved.Since the whole device is not moved, a track ball requires less space than a mouse. A track ball comes in various shapes like a ball, a button, or a square.
Scanner
Scanner is an input device, which works more like a photocopy machine. It is used when some information is available on paper and it is to be transferred to the hard disk of the computer for further manipulation.Scanner captures images from the source which are then converted into a digital form that can be stored on the disk. These images can be edited before they are printed.
Digitizer
Digitizer is an input device which converts analog information into digital form. Digitizer can convert a signal from the television or camera into a series of numbers that could be stored in a computer. They can be used by the computer to create a picture of whatever the camera had been pointed at.Digitizer is also known as Tablet or Graphics Tablet as it converts graphics and pictorial data into binary inputs. A graphic tablet as digitizer is used for fine works of drawing and image manipulation applications.
Microphone
Microphone is an input device to input sound that is then stored in a digital form. The microphone is used for various applications such as adding sound to a multimedia presentation or for mixing music.
Magnetic Ink Card Reader (MICR)
MICR input device is generally used in banks as there are large number of cheques to be processed every day. The bank's code number and cheque number are printed on the cheques with a special type of ink that contains particles of magnetic material that are machine readable. This reading process is called Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR). The main advantages of MICR is that it is fast and less error prone.
Optical Character Reader (OCR)
OCR is an input device used to read a printed text.OCR scans the text optically, character by character, converts them into a machine readable code, and stores the text on the system memory.
Bar Code Readers
Bar Code Reader is a device used for reading bar coded data (data in the form of light and dark lines). Bar coded data is generally used in labelling goods, numbering the books, etc. It may be a handheld scanner or may be embedded in a stationary scanner.Bar Code Reader scans a bar code image, converts it into an alphanumeric value, which is then fed to the computer that the bar code reader is connected to.
Optical Mark Reader (OMR)
OMR is a special type of optical scanner used to recognize the type of mark made by pen or pencil. It is used where one out of a few alternatives is to be selected and marked. It is specially used for checking the answer sheets of examinations having multiple choice questions.
Computer - Output Devices
Following are some of the important output devices used in a computer.- Monitors
- Graphic Plotter
- Printer
Monitors
Monitors, commonly called as Visual Display Unit (VDU), are the main output device of a computer. It forms images from tiny dots, called pixels that are arranged in a rectangular form. The sharpness of the image depends upon the number of pixels. There are two kinds of viewing screen used for monitors.
- Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT)
- Flat-Panel Display
Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT) Monitor
The CRT display is made up of small picture elements called pixels. The smaller the pixels, the better the image clarity or resolution. It takes more than one illuminated pixel to form a whole character, such as the letter ‘e’ in the word help.A finite number of characters can be displayed on a screen at once. The screen can be divided into a series of character boxes - fixed location on the screen where a standard character can be placed. Most screens are capable of displaying 80 characters of data horizontally and 25 lines vertically.
There are some disadvantages of CRT −
- Large in Size
- High power consumption
Flat-Panel Display Monitor
The flat-panel display refers to a class of video devices that have reduced volume, weight and power requirement in comparison to the CRT. You can hang them on walls or wear them on your wrists. Current uses of flat-panel displays include calculators, video games, monitors, laptop computer, and graphics display. The flat-panel display is divided into two categories −
- Emissive Displays − Emissive displays are devices that convert electrical energy into light. For example, plasma panel and LED (Light-Emitting Diodes).
- Non-Emissive Displays − Non-emissive displays use optical effects to convert sunlight or light from some other source into graphics patterns. For example, LCD (Liquid-Crystal Device).
Printers
Printer is an output device, which is used to print information on paper. There are two types of printers −
- Impact Printers
- Non-Impact Printers
Impact Printers
Impact printers print the characters by striking them on the ribbon, which is then pressed on the paper.Characteristics of Impact Printers are the following −
- Very low consumable costs
- Very noisy
- Useful for bulk printing due to low cost
- There is physical contact with the paper to produce an image
- Character printers
- Line printers
Character printers are the printers which print one character at a time.
These are further divided into two types:
- Dot Matrix Printer(DMP)
- Daisy Wheel
In the market, one of the most popular printers is Dot Matrix Printer. These printers are popular because of their ease of printing and economical price. Each character printed is in the form of pattern of dots and head consists of a Matrix of Pins of size (5*7, 7*9, 9*7 or 9*9) which come out to form a character which is why it is called Dot Matrix Printer.
Advantages
- Inexpensive
- Widely Used
- Other language characters can be printed
- Slow Speed
- Poor Quality
Head is lying on a wheel and pins corresponding to characters are like petals of Daisy (flower) which is why it is called Daisy Wheel Printer. These printers are generally used for word-processing in offices that require a few letters to be sent here and there with very nice quality.
Advantages
- More reliable than DMP
- Better quality
- Fonts of character can be easily changed
- Slower than DMP
- Noisy
- More expensive than DMP
Line printers are the printers which print one line at a time.
These are of two types −
- Drum Printer
- Chain Printer
This printer is like a drum in shape hence it is called drum printer. The surface of the drum is divided into a number of tracks. Total tracks are equal to the size of the paper, i.e. for a paper width of 132 characters, drum will have 132 tracks. A character set is embossed on the track. Different character sets available in the market are 48 character set, 64 and 96 characters set. One rotation of drum prints one line. Drum printers are fast in speed and can print 300 to 2000 lines per minute.
Advantages
- Very high speed
- Very expensive
- Characters fonts cannot be changed
In this printer, a chain of character sets is used, hence it is called Chain Printer. A standard character set may have 48, 64, or 96 characters.
Advantages
- Character fonts can easily be changed.
- Different languages can be used with the same printer.
- Noisy
Non-impact Printers
Non-impact printers print the characters without using the ribbon. These printers print a complete page at a time, thus they are also called as Page Printers. These printers are of two types −
- Laser Printers
- Inkjet Printers
- Faster than impact printers
- They are not noisy
- High quality
- Supports many fonts and different character size
These are non-impact page printers. They use laser lights to produce the dots needed to form the characters to be printed on a page.
Advantages
- Very high speed
- Very high quality output
- Good graphics quality
- Supports many fonts and different character size
- Expensive
- Cannot be used to produce multiple copies of a document in a single printing
Inkjet printers are non-impact character printers based on a relatively new technology. They print characters by spraying small drops of ink onto paper. Inkjet printers produce high quality output with presentable features.
They make less noise because no hammering is done and these have many styles of printing modes available. Color printing is also possible. Some models of Inkjet printers can produce multiple copies of printing also.
Advantages
- High quality printing
- More reliable
- Expensive as the cost per page is high
- Slow as compared to laser printer
Computer - Memory
A memory is just like a human brain. It is used to store data and instructions. Computer memory is the storage space in the computer, where data is to be processed and instructions required for processing are stored. The memory is divided into large number of small parts called cells. Each location or cell has a unique address, which varies from zero to memory size minus one. For example, if the computer has 64k words, then this memory unit has 64 * 1024 = 65536 memory locations. The address of these locations varies from 0 to 65535.Memory is primarily of three types −
- Cache Memory
- Primary Memory/Main Memory
- Secondary Memory
Cache Memory
Cache memory is a very high speed semiconductor memory which can speed up the CPU. It acts as a buffer between the CPU and the main memory. It is used to hold those parts of data and program which are most frequently used by the CPU. The parts of data and programs are transferred from the disk to cache memory by the operating system, from where the CPU can access them.Advantages
The advantages of cache memory are as follows −- Cache memory is faster than main memory.
- It consumes less access time as compared to main memory.
- It stores the program that can be executed within a short period of time.
- It stores data for temporary use.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of cache memory are as follows −- Cache memory has limited capacity.
- It is very expensive.
Primary Memory (Main Memory)
Primary memory holds only those data and instructions on which the computer is currently working. It has a limited capacity and data is lost when power is switched off. It is generally made up of semiconductor device. These memories are not as fast as registers. The data and instruction required to be processed resides in the main memory. It is divided into two subcategories RAM and ROM.Characteristics of Main Memory
- These are semiconductor memories.
- It is known as the main memory.
- Usually volatile memory.
- Data is lost in case power is switched off.
- It is the working memory of the computer.
- Faster than secondary memories.
- A computer cannot run without the primary memory.
Secondary Memory
This type of memory is also known as external memory or non-volatile. It is slower than the main memory. These are used for storing data/information permanently. CPU directly does not access these memories, instead they are accessed via input-output routines. The contents of secondary memories are first transferred to the main memory, and then the CPU can access it. For example, disk, CD-ROM, DVD, etc.Characteristics of Secondary Memory
- These are magnetic and optical memories.
- It is known as the backup memory.
- It is a non-volatile memory.
- Data is permanently stored even if power is switched off.
- It is used for storage of data in a computer.
- Computer may run without the secondary memory.
- Slower than primary memories.
Random Access Memory
RAM (Random Access Memory) is the internal memory of the CPU for storing data, program, and program result. It is a read/write memory which stores data until the machine is working. As soon as the machine is switched off, data is erased.Access time in RAM is independent of the address, that is, each storage location inside the memory is as easy to reach as other locations and takes the same amount of time. Data in the RAM can be accessed randomly but it is very expensive.
RAM is volatile, i.e. data stored in it is lost when we switch off the computer or if there is a power failure. Hence, a backup Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) is often used with computers. RAM is small, both in terms of its physical size and in the amount of data it can hold.
RAM is of two types −
- Static RAM (SRAM)
- Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
Static RAM (SRAM)
The word static indicates that the memory retains its contents as long as power is being supplied. However, data is lost when the power gets down due to volatile nature. SRAM chips use a matrix of 6-transistors and no capacitors. Transistors do not require power to prevent leakage, so SRAM need not be refreshed on a regular basis. There is extra space in the matrix, hence SRAM uses more chips than DRAM for the same amount of storage space, making the manufacturing costs higher. SRAM is thus used as cache memory and has very fast access.
Characteristic of Static RAM
- Long life
- No need to refresh
- Faster
- Used as cache memory
- Large size
- Expensive
- High power consumption
Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
DRAM, unlike SRAM, must be continually refreshed in order to maintain the data. This is done by placing the memory on a refresh circuit that rewrites the data several hundred times per second. DRAM is used for most system memory as it is cheap and small. All DRAMs are made up of memory cells, which are composed of one capacitor and one transistor.Characteristics of Dynamic RAM
- Short data lifetime
- Needs to be refreshed continuously
- Slower as compared to SRAM
- Used as RAM
- Smaller in size
- Less expensive
- Less power consumption
Computer - Read Only Memory
ROM stands for Read Only Memory. The memory from which we can only read but cannot write on it. This type of memory is non-volatile. The information is stored permanently in such memories during manufacture. A ROM stores such instructions that are required to start a computer. This operation is referred to as bootstrap. ROM chips are not only used in the computer but also in other electronic items like washing machine and microwave oven.Let us now discuss the various types of ROMs and their characteristics.
MROM (Masked ROM)
The very first ROMs were hard-wired devices that contained a pre-programmed set of data or instructions. These kind of ROMs are known as masked ROMs, which are inexpensive.PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory)
PROM is read-only memory that can be modified only once by a user. The user buys a blank PROM and enters the desired contents using a PROM program. Inside the PROM chip, there are small fuses which are burnt open during programming. It can be programmed only once and is not erasable.EPROM (Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory)
EPROM can be erased by exposing it to ultra-violet light for a duration of up to 40 minutes. Usually, an EPROM eraser achieves this function. During programming, an electrical charge is trapped in an insulated gate region. The charge is retained for more than 10 years because the charge has no leakage path. For erasing this charge, ultra-violet light is passed through a quartz crystal window (lid). This exposure to ultra-violet light dissipates the charge. During normal use, the quartz lid is sealed with a sticker.EEPROM (Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory)
EEPROM is programmed and erased electrically. It can be erased and reprogrammed about ten thousand times. Both erasing and programming take about 4 to 10 ms (millisecond). In EEPROM, any location can be selectively erased and programmed. EEPROMs can be erased one byte at a time, rather than erasing the entire chip. Hence, the process of reprogramming is flexible but slow.Advantages of ROM
The advantages of ROM are as follows −- Non-volatile in nature
- Cannot be accidentally changed
- Cheaper than RAMs
- Easy to test
- More reliable than RAMs
- Static and do not require refreshing
- Contents are always known and can be verified

Computer - Number System
When we type some letters or words, the computer translates them in numbers as computers can understand only numbers. A computer can understand the positional number system where there are only a few symbols called digits and these symbols represent different values depending on the position they occupy in the number. The value of each digit in a number can be determined using −
- The digit
- The position of the digit in the number
- The base of the number system (where the base is defined as the total number of digits available in the number system)
Decimal Number System
The number system that we use in our day-to-day life is the decimal number system. Decimal number system has base 10 as it uses 10 digits from 0 to 9. In decimal number system, the successive positions to the left of the decimal point represent units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on.Each position represents a specific power of the base (10). For example, the decimal number 1234 consists of the digit 4 in the units position, 3 in the tens position, 2 in the hundreds position, and 1 in the thousands position. Its value can be written as
(1 x 1000)+ (2 x 100)+ (3 x 10)+ (4 x l) (1 x 103)+ (2 x 102)+ (3 x 101)+ (4 x l00) 1000 + 200 + 30 + 4 1234As a computer programmer or an IT professional, you should understand the following number systems which are frequently used in computers.

Computer - Data and Information
Data can be defined as a representation of facts, concepts, or instructions in a formalized manner, which should be suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing by human or electronic machine.Data is represented with the help of characters such as alphabets (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9) or special characters (+,-,/,*,<,>,= etc.)
What is Information?
Information is organized or classified data, which has some meaningful values for the receiver. Information is the processed data on which decisions and actions are based. For the decision to be meaningful, the processed data must qualify for the following characteristics −
- Timely − Information should be available when required.
- Accuracy − Information should be accurate.
- Completeness − Information should be complete.
Data Processing Cycle
Data processing is the re-structuring or re-ordering of data by people or machine to increase their usefulness and add values for a particular purpose. Data processing consists of the following basic steps - input, processing, and output. These three steps constitute the data processing cycle.- Input − In this step, the input data is prepared in some convenient form for processing. The form will depend on the processing machine. For example, when electronic computers are used, the input data can be recorded on any one of the several types of input medium, such as magnetic disks, tapes, and so on.
- Processing − In this step, the input data is changed to produce data in a more useful form. For example, pay-checks can be calculated from the time cards, or a summary of sales for the month can be calculated from the sales orders.
- Output − At this stage, the result of the proceeding processing step is collected. The particular form of the output data depends on the use of the data. For example, output data may be pay-checks for employees.
Computer - Networking
A computer network is a system in which multiple computers are connected to each other to share information and resources.Characteristics of a Computer Network
- Share resources from one computer to another.
- Create files and store them in one computer, access those files from the other computer(s) connected over the network.
- Connect a printer, scanner, or a fax machine to one computer within the network and let other computers of the network use the machines available over the network.
- Network Cables
- Distributors
- Routers
- Internal Network Cards
- External Network Cards
Network Cables
Network cables are used to connect computers. The most commonly used cable is Category 5 cable RJ-45.Distributors
A computer can be connected to another one via a serial port but if we need to connect many computers to produce a network, this serial connection will not work. The solution is to use a central body to which other computers, printers, scanners, etc. can be connected and then this body will manage or distribute network traffic.
Router
A router is a type of device which acts as the central point among computers and other devices that are a part of the network. It is equipped with holes called ports. Computers and other devices are connected to a router using network cables. Now-a-days router comes in wireless modes using which computers can be connected without any physical cable.Network Card
Network card is a necessary component of a computer without which a computer cannot be connected over a network. It is also known as the network adapter or Network Interface Card (NIC). Most branded computers have network card pre-installed. Network cards are of two types: Internal and External Network Cards.Internal Network Cards
Motherboard has a slot for internal network card where it is to be inserted. Internal network cards are of two types in which the first type uses Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) connection, while the second type uses Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). Network cables are required to provide network access.External Network Cards
External network cards are of two types: Wireless and USB based. Wireless network card needs to be inserted into the motherboard, however no network cable is required to connect to the network.Universal Serial Bus (USB)
USB card is easy to use and connects via USB port. Computers automatically detect USB card and can install the drivers required to support the USB network card automatically.Computer - Operating System
The Operating System is a program with the following features −- An operating system is a program that acts as an interface between the software and the computer hardware.
- It is an integrated set of specialized programs used to manage overall resources and operations of the computer.
- It is a specialized software that controls and monitors the execution of all other programs that reside in the computer, including application programs and other system software.
Objectives of Operating System
The objectives of the operating system are −- To make the computer system convenient to use in an efficient manner.
- To hide the details of the hardware resources from the users.
- To provide users a convenient interface to use the computer system.
- To act as an intermediary between the hardware and its users, making it easier for the users to access and use other resources.
- To manage the resources of a computer system.
- To keep track of who is using which resource, granting resource requests, and mediating conflicting requests from different programs and users.
- To provide efficient and fair sharing of resources among users and programs.
Characteristics of Operating System
Here is a list of some of the most prominent characteristic features of Operating Systems −- Memory Management − Keeps track of the primary memory, i.e. what part of it is in use by whom, what part is not in use, etc. and allocates the memory when a process or program requests it.
- Processor Management − Allocates the processor (CPU) to a process and deallocates the processor when it is no longer required.
- Device Management − Keeps track of all the devices. This is also called I/O controller that decides which process gets the device, when, and for how much time.
- File Management − Allocates and de-allocates the resources and decides who gets the resources.
- Security − Prevents unauthorized access to programs and data by means of passwords and other similar techniques.
- Job Accounting − Keeps track of time and resources used by various jobs and/or users.
- Control Over System Performance − Records delays between the request for a service and from the system.
- Interaction with the Operators − Interaction may take place via the console of the computer in the form of instructions. The Operating System acknowledges the same, does the corresponding action, and informs the operation by a display screen.
- Error-detecting Aids − Production of dumps, traces, error messages, and other debugging and error-detecting methods.
- Coordination Between Other Software and Users − Coordination and assignment of compilers, interpreters, assemblers, and other software to the various users of the computer systems.
Computer - Internet and Intranet
In this chapter, we will see what is Internet and Intranet, as well as discuss the similarities and differences between the two.Internet
It is a worldwide/global system of interconnected computer networks. It uses the standard Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Every computer in Internet is identified by a unique IP address. IP Address is a unique set of numbers (such as 110.22.33.114) which identifies a computer’s location.A special computer DNS (Domain Name Server) is used to provide a name to the IP Address so that the user can locate a computer by a name. For example, a DNS server will resolve a name https://www.tutorialspoint.com to a particular IP address to uniquely identify the computer on which this website is hosted.
Internet is accessible to every user all over the world.
Intranet
Intranet is the system in which multiple PCs are connected to each other. PCs in intranet are not available to the world outside the intranet. Usually each organization has its own Intranet network and members/employees of that organization can access the computers in their intranet. Each computer in Intranet is also identified by an IP Address which is unique among the computers in that Intranet.
Similarities between Internet and Intranet
- Intranet uses the internet protocols such as TCP/IP and FTP.
- Intranet sites are accessible via the web browser in a similar way as websites in the internet. However, only members of Intranet network can access intranet hosted sites.
- In Intranet, own instant messengers can be used as similar to yahoo messenger/gtalk over the internet.
Differences between Internet and Intranet
- Internet is general to PCs all over the world whereas Intranet is specific to few PCs.
- Internet provides a wider and better access to websites to a large population, whereas Intranet is restricted.
- Internet is not as safe as Intranet. Intranet can be safely privatized as per the need.
How to Buy a Computer?
In this chapter, we will supply relevant information to help you buy a desktop on component by component basis. As desktops are highly customizable, so it is better to learn about the main parts and then visit the manufacturer or the retailer shop or site, instead of just looking at some specific model directly.Popular desktop brands are Dell, Lenovo, HP and Apple. Always compare the desktops based on their specifications and base price.
Monitor
- Size − It is the diagonal size of the LCD screen. Larger the area, bigger the picture screen. A bigger picture is preferable for movie watching and gaming. It will increase the productivity as well.
- Resolution − This is the number of pixels on the screen. For example, 24inch display is 1920x1200 (width by length) and 22-inch display is 1680x1050. High resolution provides better picture quality and a nice gaming experience.
- Inputs − Now-a-days monitors can accept inputs from cable as well apart from the computer. They can also have USB ports.
- Stand − Some monitors come with adjustable stands while some may not.
- Recommended − 24 Inch LCD.
Operating System
- Operating System is the main software of the computer as everything will run on it in one form or other.
- There are primarily three choices: Windows, Linux, Apple OS X.
- Linux is free, however people generally do not use it for home purpose.
- Apple OS X works only on Apple desktops.
- Windows 7 is very popular among desktop users.
- Most of the computers come pre-equipped with Windows 7 Starter edition.
- Windows 8 is recently introduced and is available in the market.
- Windows 7 and Windows 8 come in multiple versions from starter, home basic, home premium, professional, ultimate, and enterprise editions.
- As the edition version increases, their features list and price increases.
- Recommended − Windows 7 Home Premium.
Optical Drive (CD / DVD / Blu-ray)
- Optical drive is the drive on a computer, which is responsible for using CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs.
- Now-a-days, DVD burners are industry standards.
- DVD Burner can burn CD, DVD and play them.
- DVD Burner is cheaper than Blu-ray drives.
- Blu-ray drives can play HD movies but are costlier component.
- Recommended − DVD Burner.
Memory
- RAM is considered as Computer Memory as the performance of a computer is directly proportional to its memory and processor.
- Today's software and operating system require high memory.
- Today commonly used RAM is DDR3, which operates at 1066Mhz.
- As per Windows 7, 1 GB is the minimum RAM required to function properly.
- Recommended − 4 GB.
Hard Drive
- Hard disk is used for storage purpose. Higher the capacity, more data you can save in it.
- Now-a-days computers are equipped with 500GB hard drive, which can be extended to 2TB.
- Most hard drives in desktop operate at the standard performance speed of 7200RPM.
- Recommended − 500GB.
CPU
- Frequency (GHz) − This determines the speed of the processor. More the speed, better the CPU.
- Cores − Now-a-days CPUs come with more than one core, which is like having more than one CPU in the computer. Programs which can take advantage of multi-core environment will run faster on such machines.
- Brand − Intel or AMD. Both are equivalent. Intel is in lead.
- Cache − Higher the L1, L2 cache, better the CPU performance.
- Recommended − Intel Core i3-3225 3.30 GHz Processor.
